Winter in Maple Shade: frozen lines and split pipes
Cold snaps are the classic emergency. Water expands as it freezes, and a pipe in an unheated crawl space, garage wall or outside faucet can split without warning. The leak often appears only after the thaw, when water starts to flow again.
If you suspect a frozen line, open the nearest faucet, shut the main and leave the thawing to slow, safe heat such as a hair dryer. Never use an open flame. Once a pipe has split, call for burst pipe repair before the water does more damage.
Spring: thaw, storms and sump pumps
Heavy spring rain tests every basement. A sump pump that sat idle all winter may stick, and a pump without battery backup stops when the power does. If water is entering, keep clear of outlets and the panel, and call us about a sump pump that will not start or will not shut off.
A pump that starts is not proof that the discharge line is clear. Check that water is leaving the pipe outside, away from the foundation.
Basement filling with water?
Call the 24/7 line, and tell the dispatcher whether the pump is running, silent or humming.
Summer: heavy use and cloudy water
Summer puts more demand on the water system. In August 2016, residents reported cloudy, discolored water and the township responded by flushing hydrants across town. If the cloudiness is on cold taps only and clears after a few minutes, check with Maple Shade Utilities first.
If a low-pressure problem is only in your house, the cause may be your service line. A water line repair call is appropriate when pressure falls and neighbors are fine.
Fall: water heaters and boilers
The first cold nights reveal tired water heaters and boilers. A tank that rumbles, leaks at the base or runs out of hot water quickly is warning you. For a boiler that will not fire or a radiator that leaks, call before the coldest weeks. An emergency in January is harder on everyone than a visit in October, and same-day appointments are offered when a plumber is available.
| Season | Usual trouble | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Frozen or split supply line, frozen outside faucet | Shut the main, open a faucet, call for repair |
| Spring | Pump failure, wet basement, blocked discharge | Stay clear of outlets, check the pump and discharge |
| Summer | Pressure drop, cloudy water, heavy-use leaks | Check the street, check the meter, then call |
| Fall | Failing water heater or boiler | Turn off fuel or power, close the cold supply |
Maple Shade Utilities supplies the township's water
Maple Shade Utilities pumps water from five wells in the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer, between 126 and 500 feet deep. The raw water is high in iron, so it is treated by aeration, filtration and settling before it reaches your tap. The utility also buys some water from New Jersey American Water. Its line, 856-488-7450, is staffed around the clock for water and sewer emergencies.
In December 2025 the township closed a New Jersey Water Bank loan for lead and galvanized service line replacement. The township counts about 176 known galvanized services and about 330 of unknown material, some of which may contain lead. If you are told your service line is galvanized, tell the plumber, since it affects pressure and what we recommend.

Before you call
Know whether the problem is cold water, hot water, drains or a pump. That one detail tells dispatch what to bring.
While the plumber is on the way
Shut the main or the heater's supply, clear a path and move belongings away from the water. Photograph the damage.
If it might be the street
Ask a neighbor and call Maple Shade Utilities if the whole block is affected. If the problem is in your house, we take it from there.
What affects the price of a Maple Shade plumbing repair
The cost of a repair depends on the job rather than the season, although some seasons bring more urgent ones.
We triage by phone, a plumber confirms the problem on site and you receive a clear price before work starts.
Route 73, Route 38 and Route 41
These three highways cross the township, and businesses along them sometimes need after-hours calls for floor drains or heater failures. Give the cross street so the plumber can find the entrance.
The Pennsauken Creek edge
The creek separates Maple Shade from Cherry Hill, so if your home is near it, ask the plumber to check the sump and its discharge. Ask about a battery backup if your power goes out in storms.
A compact township
Maple Shade covers under four square miles, so every address is close to the same Route 73 approach. The route does not change what you need to do first: shut the water and call.

The whole township uses 08052, and every address in it, from the Route 73 strip to the quieter residential blocks, is on our dispatch map. This Burlington County township is outside Camden County, but the same 24/7 line serves it.

Rules and licensing in this town
Plumbing permits and inspections in Maple Shade go through the local construction code office under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code, and New Jersey requires plumbing work to be done by a master plumber, an authorized plumbing contractor or that contractor's employees. According to the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers, you can ask any plumber for the license number and verify it with the Board.

Maple Shade questions by season
Yes. The 24/7 line is answered overnight, on weekends and on holidays in every season. The plumber travels from Pennsauken, generally along Route 73 or Route 38. We do not give arrival times by phone, but the dispatcher will tell you what to do while you wait.
Maple Shade has a single ZIP, 08052, and we cover all of it. That includes addresses near Route 73, Route 38 and Route 41 and the residential streets between them.
Open the nearest faucet, shut the main and warm the pipe slowly with a hair dryer. Never use an open flame. If you see a split or water appears after the thaw, call for burst pipe repair.
The pump may be undersized, the discharge line may be blocked or frozen, or the check valve may have failed. Stay away from outlets and call us. A plumber can test the pump and the discharge. See also our sump pump service.
Ask neighbors. If the street is affected, call Maple Shade Utilities. If it is only your house, the cause may be a valve, a pipe or the service line, and a plumber can test it.
The township has said some service lines are galvanized or of unknown material. Ask the utility how your line is classified. We can replace plumbing on your side, and the township is handling its program separately.
Yes. We repair hydronic boilers and radiators, and we handle tank and tankless water heaters. Call early in the cold season to avoid an outage in the middle of a freeze.
